The traditional role for elected officials in the administrative-politics dichotomy is changing. Considering the dynamics of contemporary local governments, collaboration between elected and appointed officials is essential to organizational success. Changes in political and economic environments, and the increased complexity of policy decision-making, have rendered traditional roles obsolete.
Scholars and practitioners observe that collaboration between elected and public officials must increase. Elected officials can facilitate this cooperation by understanding the unique, nonpolitical role, of the professional manager and how it can work to a jurisdiction’s advantage and improve the lives of its residents.
